You got it right. It's a money making opportunity, similar to 'docx'. Of cause it has to have some advantages (like tp0d has mentioned: realistically like 1-4% which is nothing), but the main reason, of cause, is money.

Presumably you have to spend money to buy a new Winzip, then you'll send your new files (made as zipx by default) to your friends, co-workers, etc and then they don't have another choice but go your route as well - buy the new Winzip (just to be able to see content of your files). There is no simple way to avoid it (especially if you have no control over those who made new zipx files and don't think about the actual reasons behind the scheme). It's a plain marketing trap.
